Mona Maine de Biran of KIERIN NYC appeared on covers and in magazines, catalogs and on television throughout Europe, Asia and America during a successful career as an international model.

My passion for perfumes came to me later in life, though I’ve always been emotionally touched by scent. Two of my earliest scent memories are of fascination, the smell of freshly spritzed Chanel No. 5 comingled with that of patchouli incents hovering in the air around my mother as she prepared for a night out, and the scent of comfort wafting into my room in the morning, aromas from a distant kitchen of freshly made southern biscuits, cherry pie and Halston cologne. My experience of perfume has rarely been pure, always tainted by the place in which it was experienced. It took years for me to realize fragrance lived in the moment, not just in a bottle, and was meant for more for than just sniffing. I credit my husband, a veteran in the beauty and fragrance industry, for exposing me to this awareness. Whether consciously or subliminally detected, scent has a primal ability to move people’s moods and leave an imprint on both the individual and, by consequence, the world. My passion for perfumes was born when I became aware of scent’s ability to deeply connect person-to-self and people-to-people. Perfumes weren’t just precious things in pretty bottles. I fell in love with niche-fragrance for its uniqueness and talent for wordlessly communicating a whole scenario or state of being within the individual.

Whether by virtue of nature or nurture, I’ve been a fiercely independent character since I was a child. My early years were marked with feelings of being an outsider, a bit of a rebel without a cause. This led me to branch out and travel the world- for work, discovery and pleasure. Fortune favored me, gave me the opportunity to be a professional model, a career I chose to pursue mostly abroad to fulfill my own yearnings. Everywhere I went a book, paper and pen were in my hands. I would jot down stories, poems, questions and musings of my own “Mona Moments.” Country to country, I traveled on my own but was never alone. A people person, I applied myself to a self-study of languages and became fluent in French, Spanish and Italian. I even got by in Greek and Japanese during the years I spent in those countries because, however new or hard the task, it has always been in my nature to persevere and express. My love and respect for individualism, diversity and support for equality and inclusion grew in those years living abroad. So, too, did my understanding and appreciation for the human experience

Best New Lipstick Shades For Fall

BY: STATEMENT SKINCARE, Contributing writers

Now that the weather is turning cooler, we need to start thinking of  not only what to wear in clothing but also changing out our makeup.

Summer brought us pastels and pale shades of lip color and gloss for a lighter and more softer look.

With fall we start to look at the deeper, more saturated colors and shades for a more dramatic look to work with our wardrobe.

Below are some of the shades we suggest to go with your fall clothing. The pantone colors this year of blue, green and wine are rich and deep shades so you want to make choices as to what area of your face you wish to make more prominate. Either your eyes or your lips, not both or you could look very overdone.

You can still keep the nude look with all your camels, dark browns and olive greens. Then if you want to do more highlighting of your eyes you can do the browns, and soft beiges also.

Some of the new shades of lip color and gloss for fall include:

Left to Right : Lipsticks:

Fashionista – Freckle – Juicy Melon – Poodle Skirt

Lip Gloss for that finished look:

Luminous Lips – Clear

This easy to apply gel provides a clear coat of glaze over any lip color for an added dose of shine. You can also wear it alone for a more natural look.

Matt Eye shadows include:

Caramel – Nude – Desert Pink – Terra Cotta – Juniper

The important thing to remember is to make sure that all your colors  go with your skintone

to give you a natural but polished look.

The Right Makeup for the Bride

MakeupFrom fake eyelashes to lip gloss, makeup for the bride is a key factor in the wedding. The main goal, besides marrying the love of your life, is to feel absolutely beautiful on your special day, so having flawless makeup is just the first step. A subtle look is totally in this year, just enough to show that you’re wearing makeup, but not to the point where it takes away from the dress and the hair. Start with the basics, such as foundation, then set that with a skin colored powder. Contour with your bronzer and highlight on your cheek bones, then add a hint of color onto your cheeks with some blush. Don’t forget to blend so everything looks natural!

For the eyes, find a nude color that compliments your skin tone and add a thin line of liquid eyeliner on the upper lash line. Add some mascara to the top and bottom lashes and some light lip gloss with a sparkle! To finish off the eye part of your wedding day makeup, add a hint of highlight in the inner corner of your eye to make them pop! Last but not least are your eyebrows because the proper arch and “filling-in techniques” can make the difference on your whole face. Make sure you fill in your eyebrows with a color similar to your hair, and that they’re crisp and even. Top it off with a simple highlight on the brow bone below your actual eyebrow and your beautiful wedding day makeup look is complete!

Five of the Hottest Makeup Trends for Fall

As summer rolls to an end, makeup artists and stylists are rolling out autumn and winter beauty trends. By perusing a collection of Vogue articles, readers can deduce that this autumn’s makeup trends are quite eclectic, focusing on all aspects of the feminine visage. Overall, bold techniques are definitely the focus. Let’s look at five in-style makeup techniques to brush up on for the fall.Berry Bold Lips

  1. Berry Bold Lips
Eye-popping lipstick colors are essential this season. In particular, attention has been drawn to the classic red and a series of berry-toned offshoots. Just in time to satisfy our need for new lipstick shades, Bite Beauty released their Frozen Berries Matte Crème collection, featuring five new colors: plum, juniper, barberry, elderberry and black cherry.
  1. Blush
Heavy blush – in a shade that would complement the lipstick – has made its appearance on fashion’s coveted runways thanks to the creativity of Chanel’s makeup artists. The goal is an exaggerated, flushed look that carves out the cheekbones.Full Brows
  1. Full Brows
There is good news for those who hate tweezing! This autumn, Vogue recommends swapping out the tweezers for brushes and gels and turning the tides of eyebrow fashion. Strong, thick, filled in brows are back to define the face and demand attention. Now that is a truly hassle-free beauty technique we can all love!Smoky-Metallic Eyes
  1. Smoky/Metallic Eyes
Smoky eyes have been the talk of the fashion world for years now and show no signs of fading, quickly becoming a classic, go-to technique that never fails to dazzle. No need to file your old eyeshadow to the back of your closet just yet, though you might want to consider a few sparkling new additions. Metallic shades are becoming popular, continuing with our bold theme. Mascara, eyeliner and false lashes are not to be discounted either as we try to accessorize our eyes in creative new ways.Natural
  1. Natural
Our final beauty trend differs greatly from the rest but is nonetheless quite daring in its simplicity. Those who follow the “less is more” doctrine will be happy to know that a natural-looking complexion with pure lips and nude eyes is undoubtedly stylish.

Choosing the Best Sunscreen

In preparation for a weekend at the beach, you decide to go to the store and pick up a new bottle of sunscreen. Once there, you’re faced with a towering, intimidating wall of options. With Neutrogena, Aveeno, Banana Boat, Coppertone and the rest, how are you supposed to come to a clear, logical decision on one bottle of sunscreen? It’s time to break down sunscreen jargon, with the help of Web MD.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
For the majority of people, SPF 15 sunscreen is appropriate. It filters out 93 percent of ultraviolet B (UVB) rays that increase the risk of skin cancer and cause sunburn. However, people who have fair skin, a history of skin cancer or a health condition like lupus or melasma should consider SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Note that SPF 30 is not twice as strong as SPF 15; SPF 30 filters out 97 percent of UVB rays, only a slight difference.

Ultraviolet A (UVA) Protection
Unfortunately, there is no helpful rating here. To protect from UVA rays that increase the risk of skin cancer and cause wrinkles, look for at least one of these ingredients in your sunscreen: ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone or zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the oldest and least expensive of these ingredients, yet they work just as well as the newest and most expensive ingredient, ecamsule.

Specific Usage
Choosing a sunscreen also depends on 1) the situation it will be used in, and 2) the individual. If you’re going to be swimming or exercising, consider opting for a water/sweat resistant sunscreen. However, remember to reapply regularly as water resistant and waterproof are two entirely different things.

If you are buying sunscreen for children, avoid sunscreens with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), dioxybenzone, oxybenzone and sulisobenzone (the benzone family) that can irritate their more sensitive skin. The same logic applies for people with skin problems like rosacea and people with allergies.

Luxurious Scents for the Average Fashionista

Estevia ParfumsEstevia Parfum Paris, a perfume brand out of Dubai, has a line of luxurious fragrances that satisfies an expensive palate without breaking the bank. Designed for both women and men, Estevia fabricates an aura of extravagance that makes you feel as if you should be having brunch in a French chateau. Here are my favorite scents that I found to be the most stimulating and long lasting throughout the day:

Estevia Myrina
3.4 oz. (100 ml) $39.99
Estevia describes Myrina as the “epitome of modern femininity.” With a musky patchouli base, it is strong but not overwhelming, softened by floral scents of jasmine and vanilla. It has an elegant aroma and would be best worn on an evening out.

Estevia Carme
3.4 oz. (100 ml) $39.99
Carme is the most sensual scent out of the perfumes. With orange blossom and undertones of rose and vanilla, the perfume is a great scent for the summer. I would best describe it as a very strong and stimulating fragrance with a yummy citrus zest.

Estevia Elpis
3.4 oz. (100 ml) $39.99
Elpis is the softest, or as I would describe it “cleanest,” scent out of the feminine perfumes. Using white amber and jasmine, there is a subtlety to the fragrance, making it light enough to be worn throughout the day. I highly recommend Elpis for those who prefer a subtle perfume.

D.I.Y. Braids for the Summer

At the cusp of summertime commences the struggle to find a hairstyle that could combat the humidity while remaining  flawless. But before you revert automatically to the generic ponytail, consider this timeless and effortless look: the braid.

From waterfalls and fishtails to French braids and milkmaids, these fashionable tresses are a modern take on the classic ’do. Braids have adorned the 2015 Spring Fashion Week runway, and have been popularized by celebrities like Sarah Hyland and Lauren Conrad. For weddings, proms and everyday wear, the braid is an essential summer beauty trend that will beat the heat. If you can muster up the patience then try the top three “it” braids for this season!

The Fish Tail
Step 1: Divide hair into two sections in the back.

Step 2: On one side take a small outer piece and cross it over to the inside of the other section.

Step 3: Do the same crossing of hair on the opposite side. The hair should start forming an ‘x’ shape.

Step 4: Continue crossing the small outer pieces to the inside of the opposing hair section. Remember the smaller they are, the better it will end up.

Mermaid Braid The Mermaid
Step 1: First form the accent braid by picking out a small section of hair from the upper left backside of your head. Create a basic 3-strand braid. Secure that piece to the right side of your head.

Step 2: For the main braid, pick out a half-inch section from the middle of your crown. Divide this hair into three sections and start to make another basic braid. Only weave it twice.

Step 3: Every time you weave the basic braid add a piece of hair from the side of your scalp. These are small pieces, unlike a french braid.

Step 4: Continue the braid down your head, and keep adding the small pieces from each side of your head.

Step 5: When done, tug the braid on both sides to loosen the look.

The Four-Strand Braid
Step 1: Pull hair to the side of your preference and split into 4 different sections.

Step 2: In your left hand hold sections 1 and in right hold 3 & 4. Section 2 should remain in the middle.

Step 3: Bring 1 over 2 and under 3.

Step 4: Take 4 under strand 3 and over 2.

Step 5: Continue same pattern with left going over and under and right going under and then over.
